It’s good to be busy, especially when it means that California’s local governments are recruiting and hiring top-notch talent to serve residents!

This week, Long Beach City Manager Tom Modica announced that he had selected Joseph (Joe) Ambrosini, an experienced human resources executive, for the position of Director of the Department of Human Resources. Mr. Ambrosini brings experience with responsible and progressive human resource management in both the public and private sectors and will start his new position on April 10.

“We are thrilled to have Joe’s excellence in leadership and expertise in human resources join our City team,” Modica said. “Joe’s engaging and innovative approach will be an incredible asset to the City and to our diverse workforce.”

We here at Teri Black & Co., LLC, were thrilled to have managed the recruitment for the city.

Ambrosini is currently serving Director of Human Resources for the Cosumnes Community Services District, a special district that provides fire protection and parks and recreation services for the northern California cities of Elk Grove and Galt. Prior to that, he served as the Labor Relations Officer for the Butte County of Butte. In both of those positions, he gained valuable experience working with local government labor and bargaining groups, fostering positive relationships across the organizations and resolving numerous highly complex and technical issues. Before joining the public sector, he worked for large nonprofit and for-profit hospitals in the Bay Area and southern California, in various roles including Human Resources Director.

At the City of Long Beach, Ambrosini will manage 46 full-time and part-time HR staff as they serve 6,100 City employees.

“I am thrilled to join the City of Long Beach team and implement City goals and objectives in an innovative, transparent and accountable manner,” said Ambrosini. “I look forward to continuing to build a solid workforce and ensure a pipeline of top talent for the City.”

Mr. Ambrosini is an active member of several professional human resources associations, including the California Government Human Resources Association, California Public Employee Labor Relations Association and the Association of Workplace Investigators. He holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Chico, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Saint Mary’s College.

The City thanks Fred Verdugo, Interim Director of Human Resources, and Dana Anderson, Interim Deputy Director of Human Resources, for their outstanding leadership in their interim roles held since October 2020. Fred will return to his normal role as Deputy Director of Human Resources and Dana will return to her role as Labor Relations Bureau Manager come April 10.
