It was pretty cool Tuesday to watch live on Facebook as the Mayor of Provo, Utah, Michelle Kaufusi, both announced and welcomed Fred Ross as the City’s new Chief of Police. Congratulations to both the City and to Fred! It was our honor and pleasure to manage the nationwide search for the new Chief on behalf of the Mayor and the Council.
The significance of the announcement was underlined by the venue: The still-under-construction Provo City Center, which is scheduled to open for business in June 2022. Half of the new center will be devoted to Public Safety, housing both the police and fire departments.
Fred Ross brings local perspective to his new role, having been born in Utah; and as a graduate of Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah (BS). He holds a masters degree from Concordia University in Irvine, CA. His 30+ year career includes stints at University of Utah Dept. of Public Safety, Salt Lake City Police Dept. and, most recently, as Chief of the Utah Transit Authority Police Dept.
While at the SLCPD, Ross was considered a trailblazer in advancing community-oriented policing. He was credited with reducing crime and was recognized as national COP Officer of the Year!
We look forward to following Chief Ross’ tenure at Provo PD!
