The celebration of champions continues in the Bay Area! The new champion for San Mateo’s beloved parks and recreation amenities will soon be arriving when Joanne Magrini begins her role as the city’s new Director of Parks & Recreation in July.
Magrini is a San Mateo County native who grew up playing sports in San Mateo parks and has dedicated her career to public service. She currently serves as Director of the City of Cupertino’s Parks & Recreation Department. In San Mateo, Magrini will oversee a budget of $19 million and 120 staff.
“Joanne is a collaborative and innovative leader who has the experience and passion to be a champion for our department. I look forward to her joining our executive team and supporting her efforts to enhance recreation in San Mateo,” stated City Manager Drew Corbett in making his selection announcement.
Magrini has a master’s degree in sports and fitness management and a bachelor’s in communications. Prior to serving as a department director in Cupertino, she served as director of San Bruno’s Community Services Department, and as an associate director for the University of San Francisco where she also taught recreation management courses. Magrini will join San Mateo’s executive team on July 11.
