City of Sunnyvale’s City Manager Tim Kirby announced the appointment of Aaron L. Bert as Public Works Director, and we could not be more thrilled!

Upon making the announcement, Tim stated, “Aaron brings a rare combination of technical depth, diverse capital program and operational management experience, and a people-first leadership philosophy that aligns perfectly with Sunnyvale’s culture,” said Kirby. ” He will be an outstanding member of our Executive Team, and a key partner with our City Council and the community we serve.”

During Aaron’s 30 year-career in the public sector, he has delivered large-scale capital programs, built high-performing teams, and helped advance critical infrastructure and operational initiatives.  He currently serves as the Director of Public Works for the City of Redmond, Washington, where he leads a broad portfolio that includes water utility operations, stormwater and wastewater systems, transportation, fleet services, and civil engineering. Aaron’s previous experience includes holding leadership positions with the City of Seattle and serving in several legislative aide roles supporting Washington State counties and the Washington State Legislature. In 2025, Aaron retired as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve after 32 years of distinguished service.

Our candidate earned an MPA from Seattle University and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Western Washington University.

Aaron joins Sunnyvale on July 20 and will oversee a department with 207 employees that deliver a broad and diverse range of programs and services including major initiatives such as a $1.4 billion Cleanwater Program.
